Third brake light – position in the backglass

    Hi!

I have a strange problem with the third brakelight and the backglass.

Someone has replaced the original brakelight with some aftermarket light. Now I would like to put the original back.

I think that the place where the brakelight goes in the backglass should look like in this picture.

    Third brake light

However my backglass doesn´t have that black square.

It is an original Volvo glass so I think it is strange.

Can some one take a picture of the brakelight.

    Thanks!

Did the 780 come with and without the third brakelight?

I was thinking that could it be possible that the backglass have been replaced by the glass that was intended to the car without the third brakelight?

EDIT : It seems that they really came also without the third brakelight. So I think that someone has put third brakelight afterwards or my car has a wrong glass.

I’m not sure if it came without the bake light on some markets. but what I do know is that the black “square” where the light is suppose to go is in fact a tape or warping film.

as it so happens I manage to “brake” my tape when trying to refit the light once I bought my car (common issue that the light falls of) so I had to recreate it and put on a new one.

I bought some 3M matte black finish wrap film / foil and cut out a new one and used the sun film technique to glue it pack on the window.

I did this when my window was of the car. but I guess it can be done whit it in place. but it’s a bit fiddly..

I you want I can send you a 1:1 scanned template of the one I made from the original via e-mail ?

    Hi,

In France, 780 have not the third brake light…
The backglass doesn´t have that black square.

My coupe is of Italian origin and didn’t have the 3rd brake light. I’ve added it later (Canadian from ebay) together with the changed bulb failure relais but never came round to making a proper black film on the rear window. I’d love to get spec’s for the 3M film and a drawing or scan with the correct dimensions. Possibly someone could attach it here? (use the “insert/edit image” button, rightmost in the visual editor)

    Hi,

I’ve not been so active on the forum during the past years, so I’ve not seen some of the last posts about the template for the 3rd brake light..

I found it on my PC as a PDF document. Apparently I had it scanned and saved for this purpose years ago.. sorry that I forgot to upload. I will send it as an e-mail to Davies and see if he can post it somehow for everyone to down load. since I couldn’t upload it as a PDF in this forum.

The satin black 3M vinyl was just an ordinary film they had in stock at a vinyl wrapping firm close by. It was suppose to handle UV light and heat good. I used the same vinyl in the sunroof restoration I did some yeas ago. there is an article about this somewhere on this site
